The Art of Effortless Beauty: Julien Farel’s New Chapter in Southampton
As Julien Farel brings his celebrated vision of beauty and wellness to Southampton, The Hamptons Edit sat down with the legendary stylist and founder of Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa to discuss this exciting new chapter. With renowned locations in New York City and Palm Beach, Farel has built an enduring reputation for creating timeless, deeply personal beauty experiences for some of the world’s most discerning clientele. Here, he shares what drew him to the East End, his philosophy on effortless summer beauty, and why true luxury begins with making every client feel seen, cared for, and entirely herself.
1. What drew you to Southampton, and why was this the right moment?
Southampton chose us as much as we chose it. For years, clients would leave New York for the summer and ask, “Julien, when are you coming to us?” Our employees began encouraging us as well, and then the opportunity for this acquisition presented itself at exactly the right time.
There is something very natural about following your clients—not just geographically, but emotionally. The East End has a pace, a light, and a particular quality of life that I find deeply inspiring. After establishing what we have built in New York and Palm Beach, Southampton felt like the third point of a triangle. It completes something.
The moment was right because we were ready—not only operationally, but in terms of who we are as a brand. We do not open anywhere unless we can deliver the full experience. Southampton deserved nothing less.
2. How does your approach to beauty shift between New York, Palm Beach, and the Hamptons?
Each location speaks a different dialect of the same language. In New York, there is precision and urgency—the client is on her way somewhere important, and she needs to feel beautiful and invincible. In Palm Beach, there is a certain glamour, warmth, and love of color and brightness that mirrors the sky and the sea.
The Hamptons is different again. It is the most intimate of the three. People come here to exhale. They want to feel beautiful without looking as though they tried too hard. My approach becomes more intuitive and more personal—less armor, more expression. The goal is always the same: to bring out the most elevated version of who someone already is.
3. What does effortless summer beauty mean to you?
Effortless beauty is the hardest thing to achieve—and the most valuable. It is not the absence of effort; it is the concealment of it.
In the Hamptons, you see women who look extraordinary in a linen shirt and barely any makeup, with their hair moving in the breeze. That is not an accident. It is the result of a great cut, color that works with the sun rather than fighting it, and a deep understanding of one’s own features.
Effortless summer beauty, to me, means looking like yourself—only the best possible version. No artifice. No performance. Just presence.
4. In an industry driven by trends, what is the secret to true longevity?
Relationships. That is the only answer.
Trends come and go. I have watched dozens of them rise and fade over the course of my career. What remains is the trust between a stylist and a client. When someone sits in my chair, she is not just giving me her hair—she is giving me something far more precious: her confidence, her self-image, and her time.
If you honor that, listen more than you speak, and serve more than you perform, clients will stay with you for decades. Longevity in this business is not about being fashionable. It is about becoming indispensable in a very human way.
5. How has the meaning of luxury in the salon experience evolved throughout your career?
When I started, luxury was about product and prestige—the weight of the shampoo bottle, the quality of the marble. Those things still matter, but they are no longer sufficient.
Today’s luxury client—and I have the privilege of serving some of the most discerning people in the world—values something much harder to manufacture: time. She values the feeling that, from the moment she walks through the door, everything has been considered. Her stylist remembers not only her color formula, but her daughter’s name, her upcoming trip, and the way she likes her coffee.
Luxury today is deeply personal. It is attention made tangible. It is an experience.
6. What makes a truly exceptional haircut timeless rather than fashionable?
A great haircut is an act of architecture. It must work with the structure of the face, the texture of the hair, and the way a person moves through the world. A fashionable cut follows a trend. A timeless cut follows a person.
When I approach a new client, I am thinking about how the cut will look in six months or a year—how it will grow, how it will adapt, and whether it will still serve her when her hair is not freshly blown out.
The most enduring cuts are almost invisible, in the best possible sense: you notice the person, not the haircut. That is the goal. I like to say that hairstylists are the most affordable surgeons because the right haircut can completely transform the face.
7. What are your rules for maintaining beautiful, healthy hair throughout a summer Out East?
Always wet your hair before jumping into a pool or the sea. This is key. Beyond that, I have three nonnegotiables.
First, protection—before sun, salt water, or chlorine. This is exactly why we created our FAREL Restore and DEFRIZZ products. A quality leave-in treatment creates a protective barrier that makes an enormous difference over the course of a season.
Second, hydration. Summer strips moisture from the hair relentlessly, so a deep-conditioning mask once a week is essential, not optional.
Third, restraint. Resist the temptation to overstyle or overprocess your hair during the summer. Let it breathe and embrace its natural texture. A little wave is not a problem to be solved; with the right cut, it is an asset. The Hamptons is one of the few places in the world where natural is genuinely the most beautiful option.
8. Are there particular cuts, colors, or treatments that feel especially right for the Hamptons this summer?
Sun-kissed color that makes it look as though you have been living your best life—not as though you sat in a salon for four hours, even if you did.
The most beautiful color work I do during the summer is the kind you cannot quite trace back to a salon chair. It is soft, dimensional, and alive in natural light.
For cuts, I love anything that moves beautifully and works with humidity rather than against it—shapes with weight and intention, not shapes that require a blow-dryer to make sense. I also believe in treatments that genuinely strengthen and protect the hair from within rather than simply masking damage on the surface. Our FAREL Restore and DEFRIZZ products were created with exactly this philosophy in mind.
9. When a client first sits in your chair, what are you observing before you pick up a pair of scissors?
Everything. The way she holds her shoulders and carries her body. The shape of her face, her hairline, her jawline, and her overall proportions. Whether she makes eye contact in the mirror or avoids it. How she describes what she wants—the words she uses, the images she shows me, and what she does not say.
The condition of her hair also tells a story: the stress she has been under, how much time she spends in the sun, and whether she takes care of herself or puts everyone else first. I am reading a person, not simply assessing a hair situation.
By the time I pick up my scissors, I already know far more than what she came in asking for. The consultation is key. When it is done well, that is where the real work happens. A client is ultimately looking for confidence and the best version of herself.
10. Is there a signature treatment in Southampton that captures the Julien Farel philosophy particularly well?
The experience we have built around our FAREL Restore protocols captures it beautifully. It reflects the idea that true beauty is not a decoration layered on top, but something restored and revealed from within.
In Southampton, we have created an environment that slows everything down. The treatment is not rushed; the ritual matters as much as the result. A client leaves not only with beautiful hair, but with the sense that she has genuinely been cared for—which, after a long season, may be what she needed most.
That is the Julien Farel philosophy in its purest form.
11. After years of working with some of the world’s most discerning clients, what have they taught you?
They have taught me that confidence is the most transformative beauty tool in existence—and that it is far more fragile than people imagine, regardless of how much success surrounds a person.
I have sat with some of the most accomplished and admired women in the world, and what strikes me every time is how universal the desire is to simply feel like yourself. Not a version of someone else. Not younger, older, or different. Just the most fully realized version of who you are.
That is what they have taught me: to care and to take that desire seriously. It is never trivial. It is profoundly human. Remember, when your hair does not feel right, your day does not feel complete.
12. What are you most looking forward to about becoming part of the Southampton community?
The rhythm of it. I am someone who believes deeply in community—in knowing your neighbors and becoming woven into the fabric of a place rather than simply operating within it. I love Southampton, and I love the extraordinary light of the Hamptons.
I look forward to Saturday mornings when a client stops by and, over time, becomes a friend. I look forward to understanding the particular way the summer light falls here and how it should inform color decisions, haircuts, and every service we offer.
I also look forward to becoming part of the conversations that happen in a salon, because a great salon is never only about hair. It is a place where people feel safe, seen, and a little more beautiful than when they walked in. I cannot wait to build that here. It is all about the community—and the people are beautiful.
